The great advantage of measuring Thermogravimetry and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (STA/TG-DSC) simultaneously with one instrument is that both mass changes and thermal effects are measured under the exact same conditions. A sample only needs to be prepared once and test conditions such as atmosphere, thermal contact, radiation effect are identical for both processes.
The Netzsch STA 449 F3 Jupiter offers high flexibility due to the wide range of furnaces for different temperature ranges and specific conditions, accompanied with a wide range of sample holders and crucibles/pans. This allows all kinds of materials to be examined in different states. It does not matter whether it is a solid, liquid or non-homogeneous substance. An additional advantage is the opportunity to couple the STA 449 F3 to a chromatograph such as QMS, FT-IR and GC-MS for evolved gas analysis.
Easily exchangeable sample holders allow optimal adaptation of the system to the different application areas (TGA, TGA-DTA and TGA-DSC measurements). The balance of the STA 449 F3 is based on a horizontal design. Gas flows are controlled by the integrated mass flow controller (MFC). Well-defined gas flow conditions are crucial for an accurate interpretation of the measured effects, for example to make a distinction between oxidation and pyrolysis reactions.
An additional option is an automatic sample changer for up to twenty samples. Pre-programming allows measurements to be taken during the night or the weekend. The software can perform automatic analysis using predefined macros.
Water cooling is often used, in order to obtain exact TGA results with low drift behavior. Continuously controlling a thermostat requires a lot of energy and produces residual heat, which must then be controlled by air conditioning. Netzsch has managed to remove the external thermostat. The temperature of the balance is now electronically controlled, while maintaining excellent temperature stability. Removing the thermostat will reduce the energy consumption of the STA 449 F3 Jupiter for an average user by 70%, when using the instrument 3 times a day and 250 days a year.

AutoEvaluation and Identify are new features added to Proteus version 8 for automatic curve evaluation at the click of a button and identifying unknown polymer curves. With this, even inexperienced users are able to obtain fast, safe and meaningful results.
Results generated through AutoEvaluation can be manually verified and calculated, giving the user full control over the evaluation process. Each Proteus version is linked to the specific instrument, but can of course be installed on other/multiple computer systems.
